As the mother prays

As the mother prays
The clock ticks relentlessly on...

The onlooker can only see
a child in tranquil deep
the lively spirit of the day
submerged in fantasies of sleep

Careless laughter in the dark
uneasy vigil she must keep
unbroken is that special quiet
that hovers round her babe asleep

Ah! Now at peace now untouched
the sweetest dream soon will be lost
his waking eyes have yet to see
the world move on and count the cost

Dear God preserve this child...
