Before

Before
a whim of capricious chance
Becoming
a bubble of buoyant life
Blossoming
into a perennial plant
Bearing
love...

Attention
words spoken
with a soft caress
is this enough to nourish
impoverished ground?

Helplessly
the gardener
trapped in her icy patch of doubt
seeks some reassurance
before the grey amorphous mass
sullenly trample
her green amaryllis

They will not hear
a woman’s cry for help
they will not understand
a garden is for sharing
garner strength
against the uncaring drought

Ah! now...
the sapling shoots its essence
of abundant life
back into the parched earth
provides its own protection
for those firm roots
